Domo Dashboards: Must-Have Best Practices

Thursday, October 20, 2016

Don’t let Domo deceive you. You may think it’s a just a great business intelligence platform where you can not only store your data in the cloud, but bring all that data together to create innovative and meaningful reporting for your business. But, it’s so much more than that—it’s a living, breathing beast, (as you may have literally learned in our previous post on “Beast Modes’),  and you have to be willing and ready to take on the fun, exciting, exhilarating task of feeding, maturing, and advancing that beast to a whole new level. Here are a few tips and ideologies to help you do just that.

Is what I see actionable?

This is where many draw the line between “reporting” tools and business intelligence. While many solutions today can provide you with insight into how you have performed, very few can provide a deeper look into how you WILL perform.

With your data stored in the Domo business cloud, you have unprecedented access to real-time data across all your data sources. This gives you an ability, unlike any before, to find, capture, understand, and correct (or encourage) trends as they’re occurring, not after they’ve occurred. But that’s just beginning to crack the nut. A new potential arises from the unique position of having all your data in one place – in real-time – and that is the ability to accurately predict: what if? But that’s another story, for another day.

Does the Layout and Design Tell a Story?

It will undoubtedly catch you off guard: Domo is not only powerful, but it’s FUN to use! While this not only excites, motivates, and engages you and your user base, it can be the root of a simpler issue: you get so caught up in the moment that you forget to tell a story with your data.

At the end of the day, if your users are not getting answers from the cards and visualizations you provide them, you’ll begin to find that they aren’t returning after the new car smell begins to wear off.

The solution is, again, simpler than you may expect—give them something to engage with, something that they want to monitor 24/7 – whether on a TV screen in the office, or a pinned tab in their browser – engage them to the point that they want to check back to see if the “newest data” has arrived, even at home!

Does the data represented instill confidence in my users?

One of the biggest hurdles that customers come to face with every implementation of a new business intelligence platform is the ability to create a sense of confidence for the users they are reporting to. Time and time again, this simple yet imperative consideration is overlooked, and the result is detrimental to the success of the solution that they are working so hard to implement: the user base falls back to something “safe," namely their existing processes.

To overcome this hurdle, provide your users with the “security blanket” they need to comfortably trust and rely on the data and visualization you’re providing them. Whether those are simple, “updated through” cards (shown above), or a more robust real-time data monitoring solution (shown below), Domo provides insurmountable flexibility that you won’t find in competing solutions.
